Armação de Pera - History Not very long ago this town was nothing more than a collection of small shacks where the local residents from the nearby village of Pera used to maintain their fishing boats. It is quite probable that the name 'Armação' is a link with the distant past of the great Tuna fishing industry that existed along the Algarve from the 15th Century and before. This later fell under the protection of a small 18th Century fort that still remains in part to this day.

Armação de Pêra Armação de Pêra fut, durant des siècles, un village de pêcheurs attirés par l’abondance de poisson, principalement le thon et la sardine qui, après avoir été salés, étaient vendus au sud et au centre du pays. Au XVIIè siècle, pour parer aux attaques des pirates et des corsaires, fut érigée une petite forteresse sur une butte surplombant la mer, à l’initiative d’un riche propriétaire de bateaux et de filets de pêche. La chapelle dédiée à Santo António qui se trouve à l’intérieur des terres, date de la même époque. Actuellement, Armação de Pêra conserve le caractère typique des travaux de pêche sur la Plage de Pescadores. Les visiteurs, attirés par l’immense grève et les eaux tièdes, lui donne vie de façon cosmopolite, animée et colorée.
